Carbon dioxide is a general purpose shielding gas used primarily for short arc welding of mild steels. It can be used with all diameters of solid steel MIG wire and flux cored gas shielding wires. Also used as an inert atmosphere for many industrial applications such as the prevention of oxidisation and the conveying of flammable materials. While dry CO₂ is non-corrosive, moist CO₂ is slightly corrosive and requires carbonic acid resistant materials.

HAZARDS:

• Carbon dioxide gas will displace oxygen from the breathing atmosphere which may lead to suffocation
• Carbon dioxide helps regulate the body’s breathing function. It is normally present in the air at a concentration of 300 ppm by volume. Increasing this level will cause both breathing and heart rate to accelerate, and concentration of the order of 10% can cause respiratory paralysis and can only be endured for a few minutes.
